Oil of the Month – November: Sunflower Seed Oil (Helianthus annuus seed oil)

Hip Hip Hooray it’s November! And the time to celebrate another sensational oil of the month. For November, I’ve chosen to highlight the most understated oil there is sunflower seed oil. Before you make any presumptions (and before you stop reading), give me a chance to explain why.

First of all – sunflowers. That in itself should be a good enough reason for you to not only continue reading but also share this blog post. Any oil derived from such a glorious plant can only be magical, am I right? Yes, I am.

All jokes aside, this oil is truly miraculous. The sunflower is a part of the Asteraceae plant family. The genetic origin of the flower is in western North America and it was brought to Europe in the 16th century. In Native American culture, expectant mothers used the seeds to prevent illness.

The sunflower seeds used in cosmetics differ from those used for consumption, as these seeds have a brown or white outer layer rather than the famous black hull. Various methods are used to extract the oil from the seeds. The high quantities of vitamin E and squalene make sunflower seed oil a powerful emollient and natural antioxidant. Squalene is easily absorbed into the skin, therefore, nourishing the skin from within. It is known to be immune boosting and moisturizing, whereas the phenolic compounds of the sunflower seed hull have been studied for their anti-carcinogenic properties. As a result, the oil has been used extensively in all areas in the cosmetic industry. Skin and hair care products that contain sunflower seed oil are mascara, lipsticks, skin cleansing solutions and hairspray.

The characteristics of this oil make it suitable for all skin types as it is hydrating, non-irritating and anti-inflammatory. The slow absorption of sunflower seed oil into the skin ensures maximum skin protection. It’s rejuvenating, anti-aging and nourishing as it’s rich in vitamin E (antioxidants) and essential omega-6-fatty acids. It also helps to improve skin clarity and complexion as it fights free radicals to prevent sun damage. It reduces the appearance of enlarged pores, eliminates acne-causing bacteria, prevents blemishes, and evens out the skin tone. It is easily absorbed into the skin without clogging pores.
